POLYMER MODIFIED BITUMINOUS MEMBRANES

RHEOSEAL ELASTIC

RHEOSEAL ELASTIC is a cold applied ready to use solvent based fast drying bituminous membrane. It is formulated by blending styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) modified bitumen and fast drying solvents along with other additives which enhances the adhesion of bituminous waterproofing membranes to the substrate. Rheoseal Elastic is low in viscosity, which allows it to penetrate into the concrete pores and improve the adhesion between the membrane and the concrete surface. In addition to that, the dried coating forms a robust, seamless, totally impermeable but flexible coating / membrane, unaffected by corrosive ground water yet capable of withstanding structural movements

Characteristics
  • Improves the adhesion on almost all types of substrates.
  • Optimum penetration into surface pores, pinholes, cracks etc.
  • High coverage rates.
  • Cold applied & easy to apply
  • Strengthens surfaces, eliminating loose dust

Application Process

Surface Preparation: The surface shall be cleaned thoroughly of all contaminants like dust, traces of curing compound, oil, grease. All surface imperfections and protrusions are to be removed and repaired. Remove any protrusions and loose material and make good any large cracks and holes. In kitchen, toilet and other wet areas all openings should be properly sealed. Fillets must be provided at corners or sharp angles using 4:1 sand and cement mortar modified with a good quality bonding agent.
All shrinkage and non-structural cracks must be treated with not less than 1.5mm coating of RHEOELASTIC extending 75mm either side of the crack. Allow to cure overnight prior to general application.
Priming: Priming is not normally required on good quality concrete substrates. However, absorbent surfaces such as porous concrete, sand/cement & cement boards will require sealing to prevent absorption of RHEOSEAL ELASTIC. Use RHEOPRIME SB as a primer for bituminous surfaces. All metal and PVC surfaces should be cleaned and abraded before priming.
Application: RHEOSEAL ELASTIC can be applied by using a wide nylon brush, sheepskin disposable roller, airless spray or squeegee to obtain a continuous unbroken film. The product must not be applied in wet or freezing conditions or if these are likely to occur before the coating has dried. The product is always applied in 2 equal coats which should be applied at right angle to the preceding coat allowing the first coat to dry fully before a second coat is applied. Normal re-coat time is 12 hours. Make sure that the container is kept closed after each application. The coating must be stirred well before use. For Vertical applications, it is recommended to apply the coating in multiple layers to avoid sagging of heavy bodied coating. This can be best achieved by maximum rate of 200 microns per coat. All application should be continued up verticals to the existing damp proof course. When the surface is to receive a screed, plaster or render finish, A keyed surface should be formed by gritting the second coat with clean dry sand sharp sand and allowed to dry for the period of minimum 48 hours before applying a render, plaster or floor screed. Brush off excessive sand prior to applying the screed or render.
When two or more coats are required, it is important that the preceding coat is fully dry before the successive coat is applied. On all weak points such as cracks, around pipes, flashings use a woven fiberglass mesh/geotextile as reinforcement between the two coats of RHEOSEAL ELASTIC.
Do not apply RHEOSEAL ELASTIC to outside areas in wet weather or when rain is expected. Protect freshly applied product from rain until it’s fully cured. If a water flood test is to be run, the membrane should cure for range of 48 hours.
Reinforcement: In-corporate glass mesh/geotextile into the first coat of RHEOSEAL ELASTIC when wet, allow the first coat to dry, which generally takes 24 hours to dry and then apply a second coat.
Finishing: For exposed system it is recommended to broadcast clean sharp sand or colour mineral granules/slates over the coating before it dries, alternatively apply a very flexible reflective paint after the membrane is fully cured, which is after a week.
Protection: RHEOSEAL ELASTIC should be protected from traffic by using protection boards on the vertical and screed on the horizontal surfaces. The cured membrane could be damaged by sharp objects and should be protected against damage and site abuse by other trades.
